Japan welcomes Modi, talks underway to sign defence, trade pacts
Japan is also expected to announce that it will double its investment in India over the next five years.

Tokyo: Prime Minister Narendra Modi was accorded an official welcome by the government of Japan on Monday. Accompanied by Japan PM Shinzo Abe, Modi was warmly received at the Akasaka Palace. Modi and Abe are supposed to hold a press conference later in the day.

PM Modi is on a five-day trip to Japan to hold bilateral talks with Abe. Modi and Abe are expected to sign a number of key agreements on Monday.

While there is expected to be a consensus on boosting trade and defence ties, no confirmation is yet available on the civilian nuclear agreement, though discussions are underway. Japan is also expected to announce that it will double its investment in India over the next five years.

The Prime Minister addressed the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry earlier in the day and promised a special management team in the PMO to facilitate Japanese investment. The PM also emphasized on good governance as an important priority, that his government aims to bring Japanese style efficieny to the PMO.
