Jayalalithaa Can Go Home Whenever She Feels Like: Apollo Hospitals
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa's infection is fully under control and she needs recuperation, Apollo Hospitals said on Saturday.

Chennai: Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's infection is fully under control, said Apollo Hospitals Chairman Pratap C Reddy on Saturday, reiterating that the AIADMK supremo can return home "whenever she feels fit".

"I have already said that her infection is fully under control. What is required is to reinvigorate herself to go back. There is no major change in treatment. Whenever she feels physically fit, she can leave... She is consuming the diet which she likes."

Speaking for the first time on Jayalalithaa's health on November 4, Dr Reddy had said she was recovering well and was aware of her surroundings. He had said that it was upto the Chief Minister to decide when she wanted to be discharged.

The Tamil Nadu CM was hospitalised on September 22.

Apollo had then said that Jayalalithaa was suffering from fever and dehydration. A few days later the hospital said that the AIADMK chief was being treated for an "infection".

The medical bulletins that followed said Jayalalithaa needed a longer stay in the hospital. Doctors from the UK and AIIMS in Delhi were also roped in to consult on the treatment.

Hospital sources said Jayalalithaa had showed "considerable improvement" by the third week of October and was taken off sedation.

Due to her hospitalisation, this is the first time that Jayalalithaa has missed out on campaigning ahead of bypolls this month. In fact, she put her thumb impression on party candidates’ nomination papers.

As per election rules, candidates from a recognised party should get their forms duly filled and signed by the head of the party.

In this case, an attestation signed by a doctor said: “The signatory is presently hospitalised in Apollo Hospitals, Gream Roads, Chennai. Since the signatory has undergone tracheotomy recently and has an inflamed right hand, she is temporally unable to affix her signature. Hence, she has affixed her left thumb impression on her own in my presence."

A PIL against Jayalalithaa’s thumb impression was later rejected by the Madras High Court.
