CHENNAI: With a view to identify, train and encourage young sportspersons who can, in the future, win medals in Olympics and other international events, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday announced a special scholarship for elite sportspersons. Under the scheme, five sportspersons, both men and women, would be selected and given scientific training to contest in international sports events. The CM has  allocated Rs 1.25 crore for this purpose and to buy sports equipment and provide nutritious food to the selected sportspersons. Further, the CM hiked the assistance for school and college students who win medals at the national level, from Rs 5,000 to Rs 10,000 and Rs 6,500 to Rs 13,000, respectively. The CM also announced Rs 50 lakh as recurring expenditure to award Rs 1 lakh, Rs 75,000 and Rs 25,000 to three toppers in 20 categories of athletic events held at the State-level for the Chief Minister’s Trophy.Besides, to encourage sports at the village level, 31 villages (one per district, except Chennai district) will be selected and Rs 1 lakh would be sanctioned for each village to set up a playground to practise the sport which is popular in the area. For this   purpose Rs 62 lakh was sanctioned.
