Jeet Thayil to kick off Kovalam Literary Festival
The event to be held in the city on October 6 and 7 will feature two dozen authors of repute in 21 sessions

Jeet Thayil, celebrity writer-musician will read from his first novel ‘Narcopolis’ at the upcoming Kovalam Literary Festival (KLF), a fortnight ahead of the announcement of this year’s Man Booker Prize in London. The Kerala-born author is in the 2012 race for the coveted 50,000-pound British literary honour, having been short-listed alongside heavyweights such as Hilary Mantel and Will Self.

The fifth edition of the KLF is slated to be held in Kerala next month, after a day’s stopover in the national capital. The Delhi-leg will be held in the India International Centre (IIC) on October 3. The Thiruvanathapuram part of the KLF will be conducted at the Kanakakunnu Palace on October 6 and 7.

Two dozen renowned writers from India and abroad will address a total of 21 sessions featuring conversations, discussions and presentations on a variety of literary and social subjects, besides reading from books. Seven of them will be in Delhi.

KLF 2012 will conclude with an evening of music featuring concerts by two bands here. Monisha Rajesh, Nilanjana Roy, Manu Joseph and Farrukh Dhondy, besides Sri Lankan author Ru Freeman, London-based Roderick Mathews and Israeli writers Dorit Rabinyan and Sarai Shavit.

The Kerala-leg will commence with a lecture by frontline human rights activist Binayak Sen. It will also figure top writers Timeri N Murari, Sonia Faleiro, N S Madhavan, Biman Nath, Naresh Fernandes and Aroon Raman.

The evening of music on October 7 at Nishagandhi Auditorium will begin with an hour’s show by Israeli musician Tal Kravitz, followed by a two-hour concert by Delhi-based rock band Indian Ocean.
