Srinagar: The Kashmir Valley was returning towards normalcy for the last three years as terror related incidents were on a decline. Tourism and allied activities were on the upswing but following Wednesday's audacious terror attack on a CRPF camp in which five security personnel and two terrorists were killed has brought back fears of troubled times ahead.
A protester was allegedly killed in CRPF firing following the terror strike while security personnel said that protesters tried to stop their vehicles which were carrying their injured colleagues to the hospital.
According to statistics terror related activities had come down by 37 per cent during the past two years and the number of visitors has shown a steady increase.
In 2011 almost 9 lakh tourists visited the Valley including 32,000 foreigners. The numbers reached 12.20 lakh in 2012 and 6.21 lakh devotees undertook the Amarnath Yatra. Nearly 1 crore visited Mata Vaishno Devi shrine and foreign tourists saw an increase of 16 per cent.
Several foreign countries also withdrew the negative travel advisory. The state's economy registered a growth rate was 7 per cent in the 2011-12 fiscal but the resurgence of terrorism has once again put a question mark on Kashmir.
