Srinagar: The Chairman of the breakaway Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani, was on Friday put under house arrest, official sources said.
Geelani, who was re-elected Chairman of the Hurriyat Conference for three years on Wednesday, was put under house arrest in his Hyderpora residence, the sources said.
A spokesman of HC Aiyaz Akbar said a large number of police personnel have been deployed outside the house of Geelani to prevent him from moving out. He said a police officer informed Geelani that he has been put under house arrest and he cannot go out of his house till further orders.
Akbar said Geelani was scheduled to address a Friday congregation at Hajon. He was also scheduled to lead a protest demonstration against the alleged atrocities by the counter-insurgents working with the security forces, particularly the late Ikhwani leader Kuka Parry's son.
