CHENNAI: Passengers who arrived at the Chennai Central Railway Station were in for a pleasant surprise as they were greeted with warm smiles to match the warm weather.On the first day of the Joy of Giving week celebrations, college students helped those new to the city find their way to their destinations.As part of the event, called ‘Yaadum Oore Yavarum Kellir’, around 30 students from various colleges such as the Madras Christian College, Stella Maris College for Women and Loyola College welcomed the passengers with friendship bands.They also assisted them in getting auto rickshaws and directing them to the right places.Prasanna of CIOSA, the NGO which is coordinating numerous Joy of Giving activities all over the State, said, “We interacted with 2,000 to 2,500 people today. Some of them were very grateful for the help offered. We also had a signature campaign, were people signed a banner with the words ‘Yaadum Oore Yavarum Kellir’ on it."Courtyard by Marriot organised a day out for the residents of Sevalaya. The senior citizens were treated to a movie and lunch.Elsewhere in the city, Dr. Gupta’s Dental Speciality Centre organised a free dental screening camp at Koyambedu. Around 250 people benefited from the camp.Dr Chandragupta of the dental centre said, “We gave them a small lecture on dental hygiene and made a demonstration of the correct brushing techniques. Then we had a dental screening and distributed pamphlets.”This event was organised by the Lions Club. Another dental screening will be held tomorrow at KK Nagar. Other events will be held throughout the week, as part of India’s largest festival of giving.
