Jyoti Randhawa stole the first round thunder at the HSBC Champions, eclipsing world-class stars including Tiger Woods.

New Delhi: India's Jyoti Randhawa stole the first round thunder at the $5 million HSBC Champions on Thursday with a seven-under-par 65, eclipsing world-class stars including Tiger Woods.

Randhawa fired seven birdies at the Sheshan International Golf Club to lead by one stroke from Korea's Yang Yong-eun, 2005 US Open champion Michael Campbell of New Zealand and Scotsman Marc Warren.

Randhawa had recently hit the 103rd spot on the world rankings after successive wins in the Indian Open and the Bilt Open last month.

Woods, paired with India's Jeev Milkha Singh, battled to a 72 which included four birdies, two bogeys and a double bogey as his game failed to ignite.

Jeev, meanwhile finished with 2 under 70.

A good finish or at least a cut can see Jyoti break into the top 100 golfers in the world.
