CHENNAI: CPM general secretary Prakash Karat, who was in Chennai on Wednesday to attend the state committee meeting of his party, met his ally J Jayalalithaa to congratulate her on assuming the post of Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. Speaking of his meeting with Jayalalithaa, Karat said the two of them discussed a number of issues and it was not merely to congratulate her that he had met her. He, however, did not elaborate.Asked by mediapersons about the Lokpal issue that is generating a lot of heat, especially in the national capital, and what his party’s stand was on whether the Prime Minister and the Chief Justice of India should be brought under the purview of the Bill, he reserved comment. Karat said the party would discuss the matter at its central committee meeting, which will be held shortly in Delhi, and arrive at a decision. Karat, who attended the beginning of the state committee meeting of his party’s Tamil Nadu unit, had to leave midway to meet the Chief Minister. Sources in the party told Express that the state committee was to discuss the coming political course of action in the light of recent successes and failures. The meeting is set to continue on Thursday.
