The Karnataka Police have arrested eight individuals connected to the murder of four people in Gadag town last week. Among the accused is Vinayak Bakale, believed to be the mastermind behind the botched plan. Vinayak is also the half-brother of one of the victims, Karthik Bakale.
According to the police, the incident unfolded as a “contract killing” stemming from a property dispute between Vinayak and his father, Prakash Bakale. However, tragically, in a case of mistaken identity, three of Karthik’s relatives lost their lives.
On April 19, Karthik, along with Parashuram Hadimani (55), his wife Lakshmi (45), and their daughter Akanksha (16), were brutally murdered in the early hours at the Bakales’ residence in Dasara Oni, Gadag town.
The police stated that the Hadimani family had come to attend Karthik’s engagement ceremony but tragically fell victim to the attackers, who mistook them for the Bakale family, as per The Indian Express report.
Discussing the case, IG (Northern Range) Vikash Kumar revealed that Karthik, 27, was the son of Prakash Bakale, the vice-president of the Gadag-Betgeri city municipal council, and his second wife, Sunanda. Vinayak, 31, was Prakash’s son from his first marriage and was purportedly the mastermind behind the attack. He allegedly hired contract killers with the intent to eliminate Karthik, Prakash, and Sunanda.
The IG said that Vinayak, who works as a realtor, collaborated with one Jishan to strike a deal with a gang based in Maharashtra. They promised the gang Rs 65 lakh as payment for carrying out the killings, commonly known as ‘supari’ in criminal circles. Vinayak had already paid Rs 2 lakh in advance as part of the agreement.
In addition to Vinayak, the other individuals who were arrested from Maharashtra, Goa, and Karnataka have been identified as Fairoz (29), Jishan (24), Sahil Ashpak Khaji (19), Sohail Ashpak Khaji (19), Sultan Jilani Sheikh (23), Mahesh Jagannath Salunke (21), and Waheed Liyaqat Bepart (21), according to the police.
