BANGALORE: After battling for life for about five days, Deputy Director of the Directorate of Co-operative Audit S P Mahantesh, 48, a KAS officer, succumbed to his injuries on Sunday morning. He was attacked by unidentified assailants near Atria Hotel on Palace Road on Tuesday.Mahantesh, who was admitted to Mallige Hospital the same night, was on ventilator support till Sunday morning. His condition was critical from the time he was admitted to the hospital, and he died of massive cardiac arrest on Sunday morning. "Mahantesh's heart stopped functioning at 5.30am. We tried our best to revive him, but failed. Doctors confirmed his death at 6.25am,” said hospital spokesperson Ramesh.Later, his body was shifted to Bowring Hospital for an autopsy.CM D V Sadananda Gowda, accompanied by Law Minister S Suresh Kumar, visited the house of the deceased. Gowda consoled his family members and assured them that he would make sure that the accused would be arrested soon. He further said the government would interact with Mahantesh's family and later would announce a relief for the grieving family.'Govt did Not Provide Security'If all was well, Mahantesh would have celebrated his 15th wedding anniversary and his elder daughter Ragini’s birthday on Saturday.According to his relatives, “Mahantesh had not revealed anything about threatening calls. It was his wife Poornima who told us (relatives) about the calls only after his death,” a relative said, adding that Mahantesh was also planning to get a transfer to some other city. A woman, who visited his house shouted against the government. “The government’s failure to give proper security to sincere officers and common people is evident in this case." Mahantesh's cremation was held at Chamrajpet crematorium at 4 pm on Sunday.
