THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala Labour Movement, a front organisation of Kerala Catholic Bishops’ Council, will conduct a district conference and convention of unorganised workers here on Sunday. The convention with the slogan ‘Secure Worker, Secure Nation’ is intended to empower the unorganised workers who constitute 94 percent of the total workerforce in the country, district organising committee chairman Fr Sabas Ignatius and regional director Fr Shaj Kumar told a press meet here on Friday. The leaders accused that various issues affecting the life of the labourers were being treated in a casual manner by the authorities concerned and the trade union community alike. Only a specific labour movement  capable of addressing the plight of the labourers could end this plight. The district conference to be held in VJT Hall will highlight the demand to declare the right to work as a Fundamental Right, implementation of Arjun Sen Gupta committee recommendations, resolving labour issues of plantation labourers of Bonakkad and other places, enhance ban on trawling to 60 days and increase the minimum monthly pension to Rs 1,000.The function will be inaugurated by Deputy Speaker N Sakthan, at 1.30 p.m.
