Thiruvanthapuram: Kerala made a strong statement of its cleanliness and waste management capabilities with two of its cities in the top 10 and Kozhikode ranking fifth in other major cities category.
Anitha, a house wife in Thiruvanthapuram had a tough time managing her kitchen waste. But now now she is able to treat it at home thanks to bucket compost bins.
"Earlier I had to spread plastic sheets on the terrace and dry the waste then burn them, it was really difficult but now I spend just about five minutes there is not smell. I keep it just outside my kitchen, " she said.
Retired Colonel Prasannan too has been an enthusiastic adopter. "Land is not a problem for this, little space is required. So it's possible provided it is operated and used correctly. It doesn't take that much time. If we can spare 30 minutes a day that much is sufficient," he said.
Thiruvananthapuram ranks second among state capitals and eighth in the recently released list of India's cleanest cities. It was a tough task for the city to achieve the status. Its sole solid waste management plant had been closed down over three years ago, and the city had been grappling with garbage piled on roadsides. That's when the corporation decided to deal with garbage at the source itself.
Thiruvnanthapuram Corporation, Mayor, Adv K Chandrika said, "We set 80,000 pipe compost, 3,000 bio gas plants in house hold level and we set up more than 18 biogas plants in markets and schools and organic bio-gas converter system."
Not to be left behind Kochi has also been cracking down on garbage. Just two years ago the city had battled a major garbage disposal crisis but now ranks fourth in the Swachh Bharat list. In addition to decentralised waste management and treatment plants, Kochi has a plastic recycling plant.
Urban Affairs Minister Manjalamkuzhi Ali said, "Its fantastic we have done a good job."
Three of kerala's cities made it to the list of central government's clean cities. Though authorities are happy and proud about this achievement, they say a lot more ahs to be done constantly for achieving total cleanliness.
