NEW DELHI: Veteran freedom fighter Konda Lakshman Bapuji on Sunday announced that he would go on a week-long satyagraha demanding statehood for Telangana from November 1 at the Jantar Mantar in the national capital.The 97-year-old, who is also chairman of the Telangana Freedom Fighters’ Forum, would be joined by 10 more freedom fighters from Andhra Pradesh in the satyagraha.He would begin the movement with a visit to Raj Ghat.The Telangana TDP Forum, Panthers Party leader Bhim Singh, Small States Federation president Tomar, Telangana JAC, Delhi and Telangana Congress leaders have expressed their support to the fast.Bapuji underlined the need for all political parties in the Telangana region to unitedly fight for statehood rather than resorting to vote bank politics.Addressing a press conference along with MLC Dilip Kumar, Bapuji said the UPA government should honour its own announcement on December 9, 2009 and start the process to form a separate Telangana State.UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had promised a separate Telangana State in 2004 poll manifesto.“Promises haven’t been kept, precious lives have been lost, yet there has been little progress.If by the end of this satyagraha, no step is taken then we will launch a mass agitation,” he added.
