Chennai: After a delay of nearly three months, the much-awaited Krishna water from the Kandaleru reservoir in Andhra Pradesh will reach the inter-state border in Uthukottai on Saturday. Water Resources Department sources told City Express on Wednesday that 200 cusecs of water was released from Kandaleru on May 20 and another 400 cusecs on Tuesday.
“Currently, the water has covered 75 km and is expected to reach the inter-state border in Uthukottai only on May 26. This is due to the hot summer being experienced in the area,” said WRD sources. This is the first installment of Krishna water this calendar year and the state is expected to get 4 tmcft of Krishna water. Tamil Nadu is entitled to get 12 tmcft from Andhra Pradesh every year under the water sharing agreement reached between the two states.
Asked whether this would quench Chennai's thirst, WRD sources said the state already had 5 tmcft of water which could last the summer. “The additional water will boost the water quantity,” he said.
WRD sources said that an aquaduct structure collapsed in Uppalamadu near Kalahasthi in Andhra Pradesh, resulting in the delayed arrival of Krishna water. “The water has been released after temporary restoration work,” he said.
Metro Water sources told City Express that as of Wednesday the reservoirs in Poondi, Cholavaram, Redhills and Chembarambakkam had nearly 5 tmcft of water.
With the reservoirs getting Krishna water, Chennai won’t feel the heat, he said.
