Bangalore: A week-long theatre festival is on in Bangalore at the Ravindra Kalakshetra. Kannada Rangabhoomi - Namaskara is an initiative to bring together Kannada and English theatre.
The festival that kicked off with Girish Karnad's Yayti, showcases six plays in English by Kannada playwrights.
Organised by the Karanataka Nataka Academy, the festival sees a unique blend of old and new artistes and theater groups. It's expected to tour the country over the next few months.
Says Director Karnataka Nataka Academy, Kapanna, "My immediate idea is to take the festival to Mumbai and then to Kolkata and then we will see if we can make this an annual affair."
Director theater group Voices, Ashish Sen adds, "I am very happy to be part of this initiative, which crosses language divides and other such obstacles to help take Kannada theater to a larger audience."
Kannada theater is witnessing the coming together of two distinct styles, tongues, performers and audiences for the very first time and all of this is a bid to showcase the ocean of literature that it houses.
