California: Petra Kvitova, Maria Kirilenko, Sara Errani and Roberta Vinci moved into the third round of the BNP Paribas Open at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden on Friday.

Kvitova, the No. 5 seed, ousted Olga Govortsova of Belarus 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, in a match that took 2 hours and 21 minutes and finished with each player having won 110 points. Kvitova struggled with her serve and her five aces were offset by 10 double faults.

The difference were the two service breaks the 2011 Wimbledon champion got while winning the final three games of the match. She converted 6 of 17 break points to 5 of 16 for Govortsova.

Errani, the No. 7 seed, needed three sets and 2 hours, 2 minutes to defeat Lourdes Dominguez Lino of Spain, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3. While Kirilenko, of Russia, needed 2 hours, 30 minutes to beat Christina McHale of the USA 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. But No. 14 Vinci, of Italy, had an easier time in beating Ksenia Pervak of Kazakhstan 6-3, 6-4.

Meanwhile, the men's first round continued with Pablo Andujar of Spain outlasting Steve Johnson, a two-time NCAA champion at USC 2-6, 6-1, 6-4, Ivo Karlovic of Croatia having 12 aces in a 3-6, 7-6 (8), 6-2 win over Jack Sock of the U.S. and Albert Ramos of Spain posting a 6-3, 6-3 win over Horacio Zeballos of Argentina.

Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and David Ferrer are among the seeds who will be in action when the men's second round begins Saturday.
