THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The expertise of Akshaya will be available outside the state for the first time by setting up similar centres in Lakshadweep Islands with the knowledge support of the Kerala team.A team led by Akshaya director Korath C Mathew visited Lakshadweep Islands to take stock of the situation. The preliminary process is over and now it is in implementation stage.Korath C Mathew told ‘Express’ that Citizen Service Centres would be set up in Lakshadweep where people could get all the services offered by Akshaya in the state now. It will be controlled by the Lakshadweep Administration and local bodies. The name of the centres will be decided by the Laskhadweep Administration.“All the basic infrastructure will be provided by Akshaya. The model will be that of Akshaya in the state and the services to be offered will be identified according to the needs of the people there,’’ he said.The functioning of the centres will be divided into e-literacy, e-governance and e-business. In the initial stage, e-literacy will be given focus along with e-business.Around 18 centres will come up in the initial phase and one centre would serve 3,000 to 4,000 people. Depending upon the population of each district, the number of centres will be determined, he said. The project infrastructure is expected to be set up in three months and the centres are likely to start functioning by the first month of next year. Multiple services will be offered in the next phase which include e-district, which will be the hub of all e-governance programmes.He pointed out that the e-business activities could be taken straight away to the Islands. After the implementation stage, Akshaya will move to the backstage providing knowledge support and adding more services to the people. Akshaya had played a major role in rural empowerment and economic development in Kerala. It helped massive economic growth and created direct and indirect employment which will have a long-standing impact on the social and economic fronts.Similar to Kerala, the e-centre in the Islands will also impart basic training to familiarise people with the basics and scope of IT and operating a computer. The courses of IGNOU and C-Dit which are being offered through the Akshaya centres in the state will also be available in the Islands.
