Left will up pressure on govt: Karat
CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat expressed satisfaction over his party's success in the Assembly polls.

New Delhi: Claiming that the results of the five assembly polls have "strengthened" the role of left parties at national level, CPI-M General Secretary Prakash Karat expressed satisfaction over the party's performance.

"The assembly results have strengthened the role of the Left parties at the national level. We will incease our pressure on the UPA government to implement the pro-people provisions in the CMP," Karat said.

Reacting to the outcome of the polls in Kerala, Karat said his party was successful in getting the support of

"traditional" UDF voters and was also able to make inroads into Muslim League strongholds in the northern districts.

"This shows that the LDF has put to an end to the traditional polarisation of votes and was able to make inroads

into newer sections of the electorate," he said.

Welcoming the election results in Tamil Nadu, Karat said his party, which had won nine seats, had an electoral

alliance with the DMK and would extend "cooperation" to the Dravidian party.

"Our party has an electoral understanding with DMK and has won nine seats. We will extend cooperation to the party," Karat said.

He said the results in Kerala, along with those of West Bengal, have brought in "big responsibilities for the party"

and that CPI-M would "take its manifestoes seriously and translate its commitments to reality."

At a press conference held at the party headquarters,Karat, however, refused to give credit to any individual for the massive victories in the polls, saying that saying the CPI(M) worked collectively.

He added that the process of government formation will take place shortly in West Bengal and Kerala.

Referring to the Chief Election Commissioner B B Tandon's remark that these were the best ever conducted elections in West Bengal, the CPI(M) leader said this was ''utterly unnecessary", demanding a comprehensive debate on reforms in the EC, which he described as" one of the important democratic institution in the country."
