Gandhinagar: Liquor worth Rs 206 crore was destroyed in Gujarat in the last five years by the police department, the government informed the Assembly on Monday. Sale and consumption of liquor is totally prohibited in Gujarat. As per the standard procedure, all the liquor, including the country-made, Indian made foreign liquor (IMFL) and other, is eventually destroyed by police after the seizure.
Replying to a query raised by Congress MLA Tejashree Patel about the quantum and value of liquor destroyed in the state within five years, Chief Minister Anandi Patel, who handles the Home portfolio, stated in her written reply that as much as 42.16 lakh litres of liquor was destroyed in the state between 2010 (Jan to Dec) and 2014 (January to December).
During that time, police destroyed 2.32 crore bottles of IMFL, such as whiskey and rum, and 62.28 lakh bottles of beer across the state. The Chief Minister told the House that cumulative value of the liquor destroyed stood at Rs 206 crore.
