CUTTACK: In a tragic incident, nearly 25 senior citizens sustained serious burns when a 11 KV LT live wire snapped and fell on them at the Cooperative Society office under Banki block of the district on Tuesday afternoon. The elderly had gathered at the office for the old age pension. Three have been shifted to the SCB Medical here in a critical condition while the rest have been admitted to Khurda and Banki hospitals. According to reports, more than 100 senior citizens, including women, had converged at the office when the mishap occurred. The live wire snapped when a truck hit a Regulated Marketing Committee (RMC) checkpost in the vicinity. The restricting bamboo barrier flew up in the impact and hit the overhead live wire. The wire broke and landed directly on the beneficiaries. The electricity department had only recently installed breakers at the nearby Baghamari, Jatamundia and Sunadeimundai villages. As soon as the live wire hit the ground, the heavy flow of voltage caused trip in the breakers disrupting supply through the broken segment, Sub-collector Prashant Rath explained. The district administration would bear the expenses of treatment, Rath added.
