VISAKHAPATNAM: One person died and seven others sustained grievous injuries when a speeding lorry ran over them while they were sleeping on the footpath of a bridge near Kancharapalem on Monday night.Three of the injured, including a woman, are battling for their lives.According to the police, nine tribals of Dumbriguda, Araku and Hukkumpeta mandals came to the city a few days ago in search of work. They started working as construction labourers in Kancharapalem. They used to sleep under the bridge during night. Due to mosquito menace under the bridge, the tribals slept on the footpath of the bridge last night. Around 12:30 am, a speeding lorry ran over them. The lorry driver fled after the mishap leaving the vehicle at the spot. The police rushed to the spot and admitted the injured to King George Hospital.Jamidi Kesava (50) of Araku succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at KGH in the wee hours of Tuesday. The condition of K Ramarao, Killo Kumari and Pangi Parasuram is stated to be critical. The remaining four victims sustained multiple fractures. But the hospital doctors said they were out of danger. The police launched a manhunt to nab the lorry driver.Though there is an increase in the migration of labourers from surrounding areas to Visakhapatnam in recent years with the rise in construction activity, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has failed to build night shelters for them as per the direction of the Supreme Court. The city has only one night shelter at present. A proposal to construct two more night shelters is pending.
