Most of the Madras week celebrations had much to do with heritage landmarks, iconic roads and reminiscing our proud city’s journey to date. Throw in a canvas of cartoons on contemporary Madras and you’re in for a completely different walkthrough exhibition.
‘Madras Toons’ was presented by artist Aras recently at the British Council Library. A depiction of sights of our city through a cartoonist’s eye, the toons come to life with various scenes that are bound to be familiar to any Chennaiite— a stud taking his girlfriend to Cafe Coffee Day, a typical South Indian wedding and men on a pavement in a drunken stupor outside a TASMAC wine shop.
A memorable pen drawing was the collage effect of a large Rajinikanth poster, a streetside idli cart and a couple sharing some romantic time on a park bench – all with a massive number 373 at the centre, to mark Madras Day celebrations.
“These are sights that I grew up with so I didn’t have to think about it for too long,” revealed Aras. Notably, the cartoonist has weaved in landmarks of the city in some of his works, such as the beggar outside a car window just in front of the Gemini statue.
Also present was reputed artist A V Ilango, curator of the event, poet and art critic Indran and director of the British Council, Paul Sellers.
“This exhibition was meant to be held earlier, in time for Madras Week,” said Ilango.
But he added quickly, “With this celebration getting more popular every year, I’m sure it will soon be extended to a Madras Fortnight or even Madras Month!”
