New Delhi: In one of the deadliest attacks in Baghdad this year, 18 people were killed and 52 others were injured on Wednesday when a suicide truck bomber struck near the home of Iraqi police's Brigadier-General Nadhim Taeih in the north Baghdad neighbourhood of Shaab.

Taeih was not at home but his nephew was killed and his father was seriously wounded in the blast, police sources said.

The injured were taken to Baghdad's Al-Kindi hospital. While the general escaped unhurt, sources in the government said that some members of his family were seriously injured in the blast. At least 15 houses near the blast site were almost destroyed.

However, the US military blamed the blast on a misfired militia rocket.

The blasts ended several weeks of relative calm in the capital since a May 10 truce ended weeks of fighting between Iraqi security forces and militants loyal to anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

Gunmen also killed three American soldiers in the Sunni Arab town of Hawija, 210 km (130 miles) north of Baghdad, the US military said.

A roadside bomb struck an army and police convoy, killing two policemen and one soldier and wounding four policemen near Falluja, 50 km (32 miles) west of Baghdad, police said.
