Maldives Foreign Minister Dr Abdul Samad Abdullah died on Sunday at a hospital here after a brief illness.
He was 67. Samad, who was receiving treatment at Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore after he suffered from a critical kidney ailment, died on Sunday morning.
He was discharged from the hospital on Tuesday after undergoing dialysis. But he was rushed to the hospital hours later after he suffered from heart complications resulting from the dialysis.
He underwent a heart bypass surgery about 15 years ago.
Singapore's Foreign Ministry has expressed its profound sadness on Samad's death and extended its deepest condolences to the bereaved family and the Government of Maldives.
The Ministry said it was working closely with the High Commission of Maldives on the necessary arrangements to send back his body. A native of Gaaf Dhaal Atoll Thinadhoo, Samad served in numerous roles for both the Maldives Health Ministry and the World Health Organisation.
He had also served as the first High Commissioner of the Republic of Maldives to the Peoples Republic of Bangladesh and was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs in March 2012.
