CHENNAI: A priest-turned-robber was injured after a failed burglary attempt in a house in Kumaran Nagar on Monday. Quoting witnesses, police said S Ramakrishnan (36) of Chromepet, in his attempt to flee from the house which he had planned to rob, jumped from the third floor of the house to the terrace of an adjacent building. He, then landed on the asbestos roof of a nearby temple. “He thought that the asbestos sheet would hold his weight. But it caved in and he fell on to the ground. The broken pieces of the asbestos sheet inflicted deep cuts on his right and left hand. Besides, he also fractured his right hand and rib,” a police official said.Questioned about the incident which took place around 11.30 am, Ramakrishnan claimed that he had planned to rob the house of V Madhavi (26) at Anjugam Nagar in Jafferkhanpet. He knew that she had a lot of jewellery as he had performed special pujas at her house over the last two years, police said. After Madhavi’s husband Veerarajulu, a manager in a motor company, left for work in the morning, Ramakrishnan went to her house to steal the jewellery. When she resisted and screamed for help, Ramakrishnan assaulted her and took to his heels. The police booked Ramakrishnan for assault and robbery and admitted him to the Royapettah GH. Madhavi too was admitted there for treatment.
