Chennai: A murder accused, who was caught by the public and roughed up after killing a former merchant navy captain and his wife in Chennai, died in police custody on Tuesday.
A probe by Revenue Divisional Officer has been ordered into the death of Rajan (alias) Shanmugarajan, city's Police Commissioner T Rajendiran told reporters.
Rajan was held accused for shooting down Elangovan and his wife Ramani in Chennai.
He was “roughed up” by the public who caught him and was found with “external injuries” when handed over to police, Rajendiran said.
When Rajan “developed some problems”, police officials took him to a private hospital where he was declared “brought dead”, he said.
However, the post-mortem and RDO report would confirm the cause of death, Rajendiran added.
After entering Elangovan's farm-house near Chennai, Rajan had demanded money at the gunpoint from him.
He then started searching for cash in the house. Disappointed with what he got, Rajan subsequently opened fire and killed Ramani and Elangovan.
A sum of Rs 2.5 lakh and gold ornaments weighing seven sovereigns were recovered from Rajan.
He also injured the couple’s daughter-in-law, however couldn’t harm their grandson as the driver and others overpowered him.
“We are also trying to find if he had any accomplices,” Rajendiran said.
“Rajan was involved in real estate and granite business,” he told the reporters.
