The city on Wednesday saw a massive protest by over 10,000 Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP) Yogam activists from its nine branches against the remarks made by Ernakulam DCC president V J Paulose about spiritual leader Sree Narayana Guru last week.
The protest march from Marine Drive to DCC office, which was blocked by the police in front of the General Hospital, was peaceful.
About 200 police officials and an armed vehicle were deployed on the General Hospital Road. Besides, about 500 officials were deployed to handle traffic in the city.
Buses from Marine Drive Road were diverted through bylanes. But traffic on major roads was normal.
Police said that a case would be registered against SNDP activists for disrupting the traffic as such rallies are prohibited by the High Court.
SNDP vice-president Thushar Vellappally inaugurated the protest rally. He condemned the remarks by V J Poulose and sought his resignation from the DCC.
SNDP union president Maharaja Shivanandan, SNDP Yogam Kanayannur Taluk Union general secretary P P Rajan, Yogam assistant secretary P T Manmathan, Kudumbi Seva Sangham secretary I K Narayanan and other SNDP leaders also spoke on the occasion.
Paulose had made the remarks against Sree Narayana Guru when SNDP leaders approached him to postpone the Mahila Congress convention at Mulanthuruthy in the wake of Guru Samadhi observed last Friday.
SNDP Taluk office-bearers had contacted Paulose and requested him to change the time of the Congress programme so that people who wanted to attend both programmes could do it without any hassle. “But Paulose shot back: How many years have passed since Narayanan died! Still you are mourning for him?” SNDP union president Maharaja Sivanandan said.
