CHENNAI: Mayor M Subramanian on Wednesday kickstarted the civic body enrollment drive in Chennai schools at one of its facility near Walltax Road. During the event, Subramanian handed over enrollment certificate to 15 students who sought admission into standard six of the school.Later while speaking to reporters, Subramanian said, “The civic body has improved the quality of education in the Corporation-run Chennai Schools with several incentive programmes like free laptops to toppers, scholarships for securing good marks in public exams and national-level educational tours for students.”The civic body’s sustained efforts targeting the education sector are bearing good results. The consistent and upward results produced by our students in the Class 10 and 12 public examinations over the years stand to prove our commitment, Subramanian added. The City Corporation maintains that there are 281 Chennai Schools across its 10 zones with over one-lakh students enrolled in these schools.It may be noted that civic body schools this year have registered a pass percentage 86.33 in Class 10 and 85.33 per cent in Class 12 public examinations, surpassing its previous records in the three-century old municipal corporation. The enrollment drive that began on Wednesday would continue till June 15, the day when all schools would start functioning across the state for new academic session. Based on local demand, the enrollment drive would be extended further.Deputy Mayor R Sathyabama, ruling party floor leader N Ramalingam, opposition floor leader Saidai P Ravi and Corporation Education Officer Madevan Pillai were also present on the occasion.
