Chandigarh: Olympic medal winning boxer Vijender Singh on Monday denied that he took drugs, during questioning by Punjab Police. However, the boxer refused to give his hair and blood samples.
Vijender was questioned Monday evening for more than three hours. Sources said the boxer also denied knowing those involved in drug peddling.
His friend and a national-level boxer Ram Singh, who was expelled from Patiala's National Institute of Sports for his association with the case, had revealed that he and Vijender both consumed drugs, thinking they were food supplements.
Earlier in the day, the police had said that questioning the Olympian was not a priority. They had said they were instead hunting for the alleged kingpin of the multicrore drug racket, Jagdish Singh Bhola, who is on the run.
The arrested drug peddler Anup Singh Kahlon has revealed that he did sell drugs to Vijender and Ram. Ram had also confessed he took the drugs along with Vijender.
So far, Punjab Police has nabbed six persons in connection with the drug haul and had got their remand till March 13. The six arrested persons are Canada-based Kahlon, his driver Kulwinder Singh Rockey, the driver's father Kuldeep Singh, the driver's brother-in-law Sandeep Singh, Manpreet Singh Gill alias Mani and Gabbar Singh. Police had on Friday said that during interrogation Kahlon had alleged that Vijender and Ram Singh, a Punjab police inspector, were his "clients" and used to visit him.
Police had recovered nearly 30 kg of heroin, estimated over Rs 130 crore, from Kahlon's house in Shivalik Vihar in Zirakpur on the city outskirts in Mohali district on Thursday. The car of Vijender's wife Archana was found by police near the NRI's house. Haryana DGP SN Vashisht told reporters that they were in touch with their Punjab counterparts after the boxer's name cropped up in the case.
