CHENNAI: The decision of the State government to shift the Anna Centenary Library from Kotturpuram to the Directorate of Public Instruction (DPI) in Nungambakkam is challenged in the Madras High Court. In his public interest writ petition, advocate P Pugalenthi submitted that the building constructed on a sprawling area of eight acres covering over 3.33 lakh sqft and accommodating 12 lakhs books was designed only for the purpose of housing a library and it could not be used for any other purpose. The government had spent more than Rs 200 crores for setting up the library. When it started functioning in full swing, the government had strangely taken the decision to shift it to some other place and to accommodate a hospital for children there. When there was another library --the world renowned Connemara-- existing near the DPI complex, there was no need to shift the Anna library to the DPI. The shift would  amount to destructing the educational interests of thousands of students and research scholars, petitioner contended. A similar petition was filed by another advocate R Prabakaran.
