NEW DELHI: After Home Minister P Chidambaram, another Union Minister has dealt a blow to Kerala’s attempts to gain support for a new dam at Mullaperiyar.Union Science and Technology Minister Ashwani Kumar said here on Sunday that the dam is safe and that there is no need for any worry about its safety.“The technical team which studied the security aspects of the dam has made it clear that the dam is safe,” Ashwani Kumar told reporters here. The Minister went on to say that steps would be taken to strengthen the dam - something that Tamil Nadu has been arguing for years.Ashwani Kumar said the Centre is waiting for the Supreme Court verdict on the issue.Chidambaram had also made a comment on similar lines last month.He had said that Kerala’s apprehensions over the safety of Mullaperiyar dam were unnecessary and that the coming Assembly bypoll in Piravom was the real reason for rising tempers over the issue.
