New Delhi: Pune top cop D N Jadhav, who took charge as the Mumbai police commissioner last week, is gearing up to boot out terror.

While stating that breaking into terrorist module was "quite possible", Jadhav added that curbing terrorism was his top-most priority.

He said that the "policemen on foot" scheme, which was of a major help during his tenure in Pune, can help in achieving this goal.

"No terrorist outfit works in complete isolation. Leads can be received if we identify any new tenant in a neighbourhood and that can be done only if policing returns to its basics — policemen going on foot in localities," PTI quoted Jadhav as saying.

Jadhav pointed out that patrolling on foot was helpful not only in curbing street crimes but in other areas as well. "Many times, a policeman visiting the area on a motorcycle or a jeep cannot end in the same result," PTI quoted him as saying.

Jadhav was the Pune police chief till he took over from outgoing officer AN Roy who has now been promoted as the Director General (Home guards) after serving for three years in Mumbai.

Known to be close to the Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, Jadhav has become the first Maratha official in over a decade to occupy the prestigious post.

The new police commissioner, Jadhav will have a tenure of less than a year since he's retiring in November.
