Mumbai: The Maharashtra government and the police have not taken any action in Navjeevan Mahila Vastigruha (women welfare home) case following allegations that over 200 women residing there were physically tortured and sexually abused. A few days ago reports of women inmates being sexually abused at the Navjeevan Mahila Vastigruha (women welfare home) in Mumbai had shocked the metropolis.
IBN7 had shown the report of the committee of the High Court which is investigating the welfare home case. But even after the revelations the government has only suspended and transferred a few officers. Neither has any FIR been registered nor any arrest made in the case after several women inmates ran away and one of them came before the media to make startling allegations of torture and sexual abuse.
Following the allegations a committee consisting of Superintendent of Police Dr Rashmi Karandikar and psychologist Dr Harish Shetty was set up by the Bombay High Court, which has now submitted its report. The report states that the welfare home in Mankhurd area is like a hell. But the police have not taken statements of its inmates seriously and not yet filed an FIR.
The Child and Women Development Ministry has recommended action against four senior officials following allegations of sexual exploitation of Mumbai's Navjeevan Mahila Vastigruha (women welfare home) inmates. Maharashtra government has suspended the welfare home caretaker Neeru Sharma and ordered the transfer of two others.
The Maharashtra Chief Minister office had recommended the suspension of District Women and Child Development Officer Anand Khandagle, Women Deputy Commissioner and Child Development Ravi Patil has been transferred and Commissioner Rajendra Chauhan has been sent a notice. Three employees including caretaker Neeru Sharma have been suspended.
