Pakistan's President Gen Pervez Musharraf has fired the Islamic nation's Chief Justice for "misconduct".

Islamabad: Pakistan's President Gen Pervez Musharraf has fired the Islamic nation's Chief Justice for "misconduct and misuse of authority", the government said.

Information Minister Mohammed Ali Durrani gave no further details as to why Iftikhar Mohammed Chaudhry, Chief Judge of the Supreme Court, was sacked. He had served in the post since 2005.

Durrani said Gen Musharraf referred the case of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to Pakistan's top judicial accountability body.

"The President has taken the action after numerous complaints and having personally heard the Chief Justice. He has acted under the constitutional requirement," he claimed.

An official statement said Gen Musharraf acted "after receiving numerous complaints and serious allegations for misconduct, misuse of authority and actions prejudicial to the dignity of office of the Chief Justice of Pakistan."
