In apparent bid to put pressure on the State Govt, Kudumbashree Samrakshana Vedi, a forum floated by the All-India Democratic Women’s Association, will stage an indefinite round-the-clock dharna in front of the Secretariat from Tuesday seeking the government to withdraw its decision to grant `14.36 crore to the Janashree, which the Vedi leaders termed as a private institution under Congress leader M M Hassan.
Samrakshanavedi general convener T N Seema MP told reporters here on Monday that 2500 women would take part in the dharna. About 1,500 women will take part in the sit-in on a regular basis. Opposition Leader V S Achuthanandan will inaugurate the dharna at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.
She alleged that there was a political motive behind the government’s decision to sanction such a huge amount to a private institution while the government’s own agency, Kudumbashree, continued to be ‘’neglected’’ by the govt. She said 49,500 families under Kudumbashree are engaged in farming activity in 47,000 hectares of land. Kudumbashree, which had become a model for women empowerment in the entire country, is being targetted ever since the UDF Government came to power. The district-level officials of the Kudumbashree are being withdrawn and Congress sympathisers are posted with the motive of destroying it, she alleged. ‘’The government is cheating over 40 lakh women who have become members in Kudumbashree,’’ she said.
Seema said that Kudumbashree was not a micro finance institution but an agency set up for utilising the Central and State funds for the effective implementation of poverty alleviation programmes whereas Janashree was a micro finance corporation. “Now Janashree is luring women with the offers of money. It is with an eye on the Central funds that Janashree was formed,’’ she alleged.
