Chennai: A Muslim organisation in Chennai has issued a fatwa against yoga guru Ramdev's Patanjali pharmacy products. The organisation claimed that most of the Patanjali products are being made by using cow urine, which they say was considered 'haram' (forbidden) in Islam.
Tamil Nadu Thowheed Jamat (TNTJ) said cow's urine was being used as a 'key ingredient' in cosmetics, medicines and food products of Patanjali that are available in open markets as well as online.
"According to the beliefs of Muslims, cow's urine is haram which should not be used. Therefore, TNTJ issues a fatwa that products of Patanjali are haram," TNTJ said in a release.
The fatwa was being issued to ensure that such products were not consumed by Muslims due to a lack of awareness about the ingredients of the products they consume in daily life, it added.
Patanjali was quick to clarify and said only five products are made from cow urine. Following the Fatwa, Ramdev's aide has clarified that Patanjali products are beneficial for the poor and unnecessary controversies are being created.
Narayan, franchise owner of Patanjali store, said: "There will be no impact. Cow urine has many medicinal properties and is being used for medicinal purposes. All communities buy the product. We have a soap where cow urine and dung is used. We also sell a purified form of cow urine."
