KOCHI: In an attempt to conserve groundwater, Neeliswaram village panchayat in Malayattoor near Kochi has initiated the process of setting up of Groundwater Recharge Kits here. The kit has been designed by Kochi-based NGO called Federation of Organisations for Research and Development (FORD) with the help of National Ecological Training Institute and Department of Science and Technology. It helps rainwater to directly reach the groundwater source. “The project aims to rejuvenate the groundwater sources in the district, especially in regions which do not have the inherent capacity to use rainwater for the purpose. Neeliswaram was chosen as the first area to implement this project due to its topography. The region is rocky and the wells do not fill up even during monsoon,” said environmentalist S Sitaraman, who is a part of the initiative. The kit is six-feet long, two-feet wide and 1.5-feet deep, and is designed to collect maximum quantity of rainwater. “The water can either be used directly during the monsoon or can be used to recharge the groundwater sources. This method of groundwater conservation was being used in other parts of the state for a long time now,” said Sitaraman. In case of regions where the groundwater source is very poor, four such kits can be placed around a well so that rainwater directly enriches the well’s resource. Environmental activists involved in the project said that the initiative would be useful in the areas which depend on water brought in tanker lorries and also other remote areas. The project implementation in the Neeliswaram village was inaugurated by panchayat president Radhakrishnan Chengath.
