New Delhi: The Central government will notify appointment of the new Attorney General for India this week.
On his return from the three-nation tour on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will vet the names proposed for appointment as the top law officer.
Sources in the PMO told CNN-News18 that three names on the PM's table include senior lawyer Harish Salve, current Solicitor General Ranjit Kumar and veteran advocate K K Venugopal, whose name has made the last minute entry.
While Salve and Kumar were already in the fray after Mukul Rohatgi wrote to step down as AG following completion of his first term on June 11, Venugopal has emerged as a strong candidate owing to his vast experience as a lawyer and expertise in constitutional law.
Speaking to CNN-News18, Venugopal confirmed that he has been consulted about his proposed appointment.
"It is premature to comment on the issue. There are some other names too that will be discussed once the PM is back to country. Let him come back and then we will see," Venugopal, 86, said.
Venugopal, who started his practice in the apex court in early 1960s, added that he has been informed by the PMO that a decision is likely after the PM's return.
Venugopal has held the office of Additional Solicitor General in Morarji Desai's Government.
He has appeared in variety of cases in last 50 years. Venugopal was appointed as amicus curiae to assist the Supreme Court in 2G spectrum case. He also appeared for BJP leader L K Advani in the Babri demolition case, in which the apex court recently clubbed the two trials and held that BJP leaders, including Advani, Uma Bharti and Murli Manohar Joshi, will have to face trial along with kar sevaks for demolition of the disputed structure.
