Nitish Kumar is Bihar's new CM
After 15 years of Lalu Raj, Nitish Kumar takes over as the new Chief Minister of Bihar. State BJP chief Sushil Kumar Modi becomes his deputy.

New Delhi: Nitish Kumar has taken oath as the 31st Chief Minister of Bihar. State BJP chief, Sushil Kumar Modi, has also been sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister.

Both Nitish and Modi were sworn-in by Governor Buta Singh at Patna's Gandhi Maidan.

The change of guard in Bihar is being seen as a historic transition of power following NDA's landslide victory in the Assembly polls which saw the end of Lalu Prasad's 15-year-old regime.

The NDA is celebrating the swearing-in in a big way, with the BJP stalwarts Atal Behari Vajpayee, L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi, Arun Jaitley and Uma Bharti attending the ceremony.

Regional allies like Prakash Singh Badal, Naveen Patnaik and Mamata Banerjee were also been invited. But Lalu Prasad, the man humbled by Nitish Kumar, has decided to give the swearing-in a miss.

On Wednesday night, Bihar Governor Buta Singh invited Nitish Kumar to form the government after he staked claim with letters of support from 142 MLAs from JD (U) and BJP in the 243-member Assembly.

Twelve others are also likely to be inducted into the state Cabinet. Nitish Kumar is expected to expand his ministerial council later drawing representatives from JD(U) and BJP in proportion to the strength of the two parties in the Assembly.

Earlier in the day, Nitish Kumar was unanimously elected leader of JD(U) legislature group and the NDA legislature party in the Bihar Assembly.
