Don't be surprised if you see Ghaziabad police personnel patrolling on bicycles. "In the next ten days, cops will begin patrolling the area on bicycles," Ghaziabad SSP Dharmendra Singh said, noting that it would strengthen the beat constable system, and make cops with "fat tummy" fit.
"The bicycles will be fit with gears so that police can chase robbers riding on it at high speed. Riding bicycles will also help us strengthen beat constable system as police vehicles like PCRs often cannot reach congested areas," the SSP told PTI.
Explaining the implementation of the system, he said 100 geared bicycles will be introduced in the first phase. Based on the response it gets, more will be added.
"In the first phase, Ghaziabad Development Authority (GDA) will provide 100 geared-bicycles. If we get good response, we will ask GDA to provide more bicycles," he said.
On being asked about the "old method" being implemented in the era of technologies, he said even in London police personnel patrol on bicycles. "We are not going back. London Police also use bicycles for patrolling and people also like it. After implementing this system, police will be able to reach out to every complainant," Singh said.
At present, Ghaziabad district police has 45 PCRs for patrolling the area.
