A gang-rape attempt was made on a nurse at a private hospital in Bihar, said the police on Thursday, adding that she escaped the crime scene after inflicting a cut on the private parts of an assaulter with a blade. It comes one month after a trainee doctor was raped and murdered at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, triggering nationwide protest and indefinite strike of junior doctors in West Bengal.
The Bihar Police claimed that one of the assaulters was a doctor and also served as the RBS Health Care Centre administrator in Gangapur under the Musrighararari police station limits in Samastipur district. The nurse was reportedly finishing off her work at the hospital when Dr Sanjay Kumar and two of his aides tried to rape her, allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
She extricated herself from the clutches of the assaulters after putting a cut at the doctor’s genitals using a blade. She managed to escape and dial the police after stowing away in a field outside the hospital.
Deputy Superintendent of Police Sanjay Kumar Pandey said that a team was rushed to the hospital and three people were arrested after taking safe custody of the nurse. Besides Dr Kumar, the other two accused were identified as Awadhesh Kumar and Sunil Kumar Gupta.
‘Courage Shown by Nurse Is Praiseworthy’
DSP Kumar noted that the assaulters cut off the connection of the CCTV cameras and had locked the hospital from the inside before trying to assault the nurse sexually. “The presence of mind and courage shown by the survivor is praiseworthy,” he said.
During the initial probe at the premises, the police recovered the blade used by the nurse, blood-stained clothes, a liquor bottle, and three mobile phones. The police claimed that the three men had been drinking before the incident and they would also be charged under the prohibition laws given the dry state declaration in Bihar.
