Hyderabad: Australia Deputy Prime Minister Julia Gillard said on Thursday the country was taking action against scams and fraudulent activities in the education sector. The statement was in the wake of the attack on a journalist of an Indian-origin, who tried to expose migration and education scams in Australia against students from other countries, including India.
''We take allegations of fraud in student visa and permanent residence cases very seriously. Under Australia's criminal and migration legislation, there are serious penalties for the offence of forgery and false papers,'' Ms Gillard said in a press release, here.
''We are continuing to reach out to students through hotlines, consultative mechanisms and direct contact, ensuring their voices are heard,'' she said.
On June 12, the Deputy Prime Minister had announced a hotline for students to raise their concerns. She had also called for nominations for the International Student Roundtable which would take place on September 14 and 15. Participants would have the opportunity to discuss issues affecting their experience in
Australia.
Australia's police forces have already reduced the incidence of attack on students, she claimed, Australia's High Commissioner to India John McCarthy said ''There is no doubt that further challenges remain, but I am convinced that we are on the right path.''
''These are complex problems and will require complex solutions, but there is no doubt that the very top level of the Australian Government is focused on protecting the interests of international students,'' he added.
