Panic moments at Math: Youth remanded in custody

The Bihari youth, Satnam Singh, who had turned violent during a routine darshan of Mata Amritanandamayi at the Amritanandamayi Math, was remanded to judicial custody on Thursday evening after being slapped charges including, attempt to murder.

Satnam Singh, hailing from Gaya district of Bihar, had created tense moments at the Math on Wednesday, when he rushed towards the dais during the darshan. He also attacked a civil police officer, who attempted to stop him.

The officer, P Joy, suffered minor injuries in the attack. Satnam has been charged with the Section 307 (attempt to murder), Section 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) and Section 453 (trespassing).

Karunagappally Circle Inspector D Radhakishna Pillai said that the attempts to elicit more information from the youth failed. He is presumed to have been suffering from mental depression.

Meanwhile, his cousin Bimal Kishore, who is working with a national news channel, arrived from Delhi. Bimal has told police that Satnam has been showing signs of mental illness for some time now. However, he had no evidence to prove that Satnam was a patient, Circle Inspector said. Satnam was a law student, who discontinued his studies and left home three months ago. He had been roaming around various places and Ashram.

The police said that his father Hareendra Kumar Singh had given a complaint with the Sherghati police station in Gaya after he went missing.

Satnam’s family is a reputed Brahmin family in the area, the police said. Swami Amritaswarupananda Puri, Vice-Chairman of Mata Amritanandamayi Math, told ‘Express’ that the Math authorities has taken the attempt on Math with great concern.
