KOCHI: A petition was filed before the Kerala High Court on Wednesday against the government’s decision to administer the Pentavalent vaccine under the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP).The petitioner Dr P G Hari, president of Janakeeya Manushyavakasha Prasthanam, alleged that no proper studies were conducted before the roll-out of the vaccine. “The Principal Secretary of the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has recommended the HIB vaccine as the Pentavalent vaccine in Kerala and Tamil Nadu as part of the UIB. Though studies have shown that the HIB vaccine had several side effects, the state authorities were going ahead with the administration of the vaccine. The side effects of the vaccine have been reported from various parts of the world, including Sri Lanka, Bhutan and Bangladesh,” he said. It is claimed that the vaccine can eradicate Tuberculosis, Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis and Poliomyelitis. The petitioner submitted that the roll-out was to protect the vested interests of pharmaceutical companies and international agencies like the Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunisation (GAVI) and Billgate.
