CHENNAI: A habeas corpus writ plea has been made in the Madras High Court to release Pakka aka Vijaya, wife of Subramani, a mentally ill life convict in a murder case and languishing in the Vellore Central Prison for over 20 years.According to advocate P Pugalenthi, when he met Nalini, the prime accused in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, at the Special Prison for Women in Vellore, Nalini told him that the woman had been in the prison without appropriate treatment or counselling since April 10, 1990. Her husband had been lodged in the prison for men in Vellore. They were arrested in connection with a murder case. None of their relatives or friends were of any help, Nalini told him.In his capacity as the director of Prisoner Rights Forum, he sent a representation for the premature release of Vijaya on September 26 last. In response to his representation, the Additional Director General of Prisons, in a communication dated October 28 last, informed the Home Secretary that Vijaya would be considered for premature release as per a GO dated November 10, 1994 on her completing 20 years of imprisonment. But, there was no further progress in the matter.Hence, the petition.When the petition came up before a division bench comprising Justices C Nagappan and T Sudanthiram today, Additional Public Prosecutor took notice. The bench posted the matter after two weeks.
