Podcast: Sikkim quake is a rude awakening
India's 'mainland-periphery' policy is tragically reflected in the recent earthquakes that rocked Sikkim.

New Delhi: CNN-IBN's Chief National Correspondent Sumon K Chakraborty laments the fact that India has always adopted a 'mainland-periphery' policy with its North-East, a fact that is tragically reflected in the recent earthquakes that rocked Sikkim last week. Bengal-born Sumon has travelled a lot in the region, and proudly says that it is one of the most beautiful parts of the country, if only the country owned it and felt responsible towards it. Lakhs of tourists visit the North-East every year, and yet Sikkim doesn't have a single airport. Had there been a proper airport at Sikkim, the relief work could have been done much more efficiently and swiftly. Sumon also asks the government to be mindful of the region being prone to earthquakes and ensure that the preparedness in times of such crisis should be more effective. He questions India's disaster management policy in general, and calls for its revamp.
