Imphal: Prohibitory orders have been imposed in Imphal West district of Manipur in view of agitation by various social organisations demanding implementation of the Inner Line Permit System (ILPS) and withdrawal of the Armed Forces Special Powers (Assam and Manipur) Act 1958 from the state.
Officials in the district administration said on Friday the orders under section 144 CrPC, issued by District Magistrate K Radhakumar Singh, came into effect from 6 PM of August 27 and would continue to be in force until further orders.
Assembly of five or more persons, carrying of weapons and activities which may cause disruption of normal life were prohibited, they said, adding the order was issued in view of the ongoing agitation by various social organisations demanding implementation of the ILPS and removal of AFSPA in the past few months.
Officials said Joint Committee on Inner Line Permit System (JCILPS), which has been spearheading the stir for implementation of ILPS in the state, has intensified its agitation throughout the state but Imphal West district and some other valley districts witnessed large scale procession, sit-in protest by women and other democratic forms of agitations to press its demand in the past three months.
On the other hand, various social organisations also intensified their agitation demanding withdrawal of AFSPA and release of social activist Irom Sharmila who has been on fast for more than 14 years demanding the removal of AFSPA, they said.
Sharmila, who was arrested under section 309 of IPC (attempt to commit suicide), was released on August 19 by a local court but was re-arrested by the government under the same Act.
Sharmila, who has been released from time to time, is being fed through the nose at government hospital at Porompat, officials added.
