New Delhi: Actor Rani Mukherji on Friday lost possession of the land she purchased near Shirdi in Maharashtra after the state government declared the transaction as illegal.
The state government has formally taken over the 11,000 sq ft of land that Rani bought in 2005. The actor was reportedly “unaware” that it was farmland and could not be sold.
Though she paid Rs 1,32,000 for the registration, she was told the ownership could not be transferred in her name as it was government land leased out to a farmer.
The original owner of the land was a farmer who, with the permission of the government had started a brick kiln, in 1981. However, property prices of the area appreciated tremendously since then, so the he started selling the land in bits and pieces.
Apart from Rani, another buyer was one Sampat More who sold the land to the actress as he did not have his name registered in the documents. Rani purchased it without verifying the document, according to news agency IANS.

Rani, who was served a legal notice in the land scam case, had reportedly paid Rs 33 lakh in December 2005 for the non-transferable farmland.
The land was purchased in the name of Rani's father Ram Mukherji.
On realising that she was on the verge of losing Rs 33 lakh, Rani reportedly approached Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh in December 2007 for help. Deshmukh then directed the Ahmednagar Collector to inquire into the matter.
