Mumbai: Stamp paper scam accused Abdul Karim Telgi was upset with the verdict of the special court in Bangalore, which sentenced him to 10 years in prison for masterminding the multi-crore scam. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on him.
Telgi, who is in the Pune's Yerwada Central Jail since his arrest three years ago, is said to be upset because he felt the real culprits of the scam have gone scot-free.
"Telgi was upset because he felt the real culprits were roaming free while he has become victim of a conspiracy," PTI quoted Telgi's counsel Milind Pawar as saying.
The lawyer said his client wanted to become "an approver in the (Bangalore) case so that he could tell the truth".
Pawar, who met Telgi in jail on Saturday, said his client plans to challenge the verdict in the high court.
Telgi has been sentenced for the first time in the scam, which spread across 11 states and is reckoned to have cost the government at least Rs 30,000 crore. He has similar cases registered against him in Mumbai, Pune and other places.
The key accused, who had confessed in a fake stamp case registered against him in Mumbai, was keen to do the same in all the remaining cases, he said.
Telgi had on March 1 filed an application before the Special MCOCA Court in Pune, seeking permission to become an approver and also sought pardon.
